Literature Text

(Lights up on a modest kitchen.  MAN and WOMAN are standing, facing each other.)

MAN
Did you notice the prices lately?

WOMAN
Of?

MAN
Uh, dice?

WOMAN
Dice?

MAN
Dice.

    (Pause)

WOMAN
No.

    (MAN shakes his head.)

MAN
It's sick; really sick.

WOMAN
Sick, huh?

MAN
Sick stuff.

WOMAN
Is all you're going to do is complain?

MAN
Is all you're going to do is criticize?

WOMAN
Fair.  Fair. (beat) Fair is fair.

MAN
Fair is far, you mean.

    (WOMAN crosses her arms.)

WOMAN
I don't follow.

MAN
No you mean. (beat) Follow?

WOMAN
Should I feel insulted by the direction of this?

MAN
Do you feel you should?

WOMAN
Does that even play a part?

    (Pause)

MAN
Does what play a part?

WOMAN
Feelings? (beat) Feelings…as in "Do you feel you should feel insulted?"

(MAN leans his temple on the point of his index finger.)

MAN
Where were me?

WOMAN
Do you mean, where were we?

MAN
Perhaps.  Does that even matter?

WOMAN
When did you get to be such a nihilist?

MAN
I could ask you the same.

WOMAN
No, I'm more an existentialist-depressive.

MAN
Really?  I never would have figured you for one.  When did this happen?  How did you –

WOMAN
What's with all the questions?

MAN
Sorry, I get it from my sister-in-law.

WOMAN
Get what?  Is it contagious?

MAN
No, you can only get it through your blood line.  You're born with the disease, so to speak.

WOMAN
But she's your sister-in-law — how does that…I mean…huh?

MAN
It's rather complicated.

WOMAN
I see. (beat) So, only you and she have it?

MAN
Pretty much.

WOMAN
How did you know she was diseased?—With the same disease, I mean.

MAN
Empirical observation of behavior.

WOMAN
I see.

(WOMAN glances up, then back down.)

    (Pause)

MAN
(looking up) What do you see?

WOMAN
The sick prices.  Sick, isn't it?

MAN
Dice prices.  Sick.

WOMAN
Very.

    END OF PLAY
Another humorous addition to the MAN/WOMAN collection.

:iconhouse-of-playwrights:'s Weekly-ish Prompt from Harold Pinter's The Homecoming (2/8/11):

"How did you know she was diseased?"

Feedback: Do the pacing and oddball/absurdist dialogue work effectively to elucidate on the numskullish personality of the characters, or do these elements merely come across as stilted and/or stiff?

Absurdist it certainly was, but the dialogue was at the same time refreshingly original.
